Ribera arts review - May 2, 2014

The program of the Monday, May 5 meeting of the Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) switches the members attention from fine arts to graphics with a TED talk, “Great Design is Serious, Not Solemn,” by graphic designer Paula Scher.

An interview in the magazine “Computer Arts,” reported, “ Paula Scher continues to set standards in graphic design with bold imagery and a highly illustrative approach to typography.” In three decades at the leading edge of the graphics industry She has created many iconic logos, including those of Citibank and the Metropolitan Opera, and has done everything else from Boston album covers to Elvis Costello posters.

As a fine artist, Scher has become increasingly well known for  microscopically detailed map paintings, densely latticed with hand-lettered text that evoke not only place but the varied political, historical and cultural meanings (and preconceptions) brought to the world by the viewer.

The ASA meeting at La Bodega Restaurant begins at 10 a.m. under the direction of President Deena Haftka.
