Ribera Arts Review - June 15, 2013

The event to benefit Lake Chapala, Una Tarde de Verano (A Summer Afternoon), is  billed as “a unique fun happening involving music, art, yoga, arts and crafts and good food, set in a beautiful garden overlooking Lake Chapala.”

The all-day “happening” takes place on Saturday, June 22 at Casa Collignon (Paseo de las Brisas 45, La Floresta, a half-block from the Hotel Real de Chapala).

Visitors are free to turn up from 10 a.m., when an art exhibition and an assortment of stands open.  A demonstration of postures by Paul King and Chantal Gomez of Practica Yoga will start at 11:30 a.m.

Lunch featuring live music by Collage (guitar by Marucio Sanchez) can be enjoyed between 2 and 4 p.m. After lunch there will be a presentation of projects to benefit Lake Chapala given by the Ollin Group. An auction and raffle are scheduled from 5-6:30 p.m., followed by a yoga demonstration by Acro Yoby.

The headline musical act, a performance by well-known countertenor Santiago Cumplido, begins at 7 p.m.  The evening will conclude in lively style at 8:30 p.m., when Los Inmortales take the stage to sing classic rock songs from the 1960s.

Tickets cost 250 pesos (includes raffle, tacos and agua fresca).  Part of the proceeds are destined for projects to benefit  Lake Chapala.

Book signing

J.C. Romero, author of “Demons of Betrayal” – a mystery combined with historical events set during the 16th century French Reformation – will be signing copies of her book on Wednesday, June 19, from 2-4 p.m. at El Piano Rojo. Romero is a semi-retired archaeologist who lives in Mexico. She attributes most of her writing motivation to the years she lived in Egypt. See her website at http://sbpra.com/jcromero.

Harp Festival

Traditional Mexican music will raise the rafters at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo during the Encuentro de Arpas, Salterios y Mas scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, from 2 p.m. The off-beat musicians’ festival will bring together talented ensembles and soloists from Jalisco and beyond performing the melodies of yesteryear on the Mexican folk harp, psaltery and other acoustical instruments.

Admission is free of charge. Spectators may come and go as they please and are welcome to bring whatever beverages and snacks they choose to consume and share with others.

The Gonzalez Gallo Center, housed in Chapala’s former railway station, is located on Avenida La Cristiania, two blocks off Avenida Pepe Guizar and the junction with the highway to Mezcala.  

Naked Stage

The Naked Stage, which presents minimalistic play reading for adult theater lovers, presents “Occupant” by Edward Albee on Friday, June 21; Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23.

Directed by Betty Lloyd Robinson and featuring Jeritza McCarter and Pat Carroll, the show is a portrait of the artist Louise Nevelson, one of the most renowned sculptors of the 20th Century.

Performances are at 4 p.m. The box office opens at 3:15 p.m. and the bar at 3 p.m.

The theater is located at Rio Bravo 10A, behind Daniel’s Restaurant in the Plaza de la Ribera.

Orchestra bus trips

Viva la Musica has planned four bus trips to Guadalajara for the upcoming summer season of concerts given by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) at the city’s historic Degollado Theater.

The trips are as follows:

Friday, June 21. Schubert’s “Symphony No.5,” Brahms’ “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.1” and “Fuga (Ricercata) a 6 voci for Orchestra” (arranged from Bach’s Musical Offering) by Bach and Webern. Spain’s Oriol Sans conducts; Christian Leotta is the invited pianist. Bus departs 4:30 p.m., and includes a  stop at a restaurant before the concert.

Sunday, June 30. De Falla’s “Three Cornered Hat, Suite No.1” and Bruch’s  “Symphony No. 3.”  Jesus Amigo of Spain conducts.  Anatoly Zatin, a Russian musician, composer and teacher residing in Colima, will be on hand to play the piano in one of his own works, “Double concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Orchestra.”  This will also feature Vladimir  Kafelnikov on trumpet. Bus departs 10:30 a.m. No restaurant stop.

Friday, July 5. Italy’s Guido Maria Guida leads the orchestra in Gustav Mahler’s longest piece, “Symphony No.3.”  The female section of the Jalisco State Choir and a children’s choir will be on stage.  Mezzosoprano Carla Lopez Speziale will perform the solos.  Bus departs 4:30 p.m., and includes a stop at a restaurant before the concert.

Sunday, July 14. Anatoly Zatin conducts Moncayo’s “Sinfonietta” and Prokofiev’s “Concerto No. 3 for paino and orchestra” and “Symphony No. 5.”  Pianist Vlada Vasilieva is the invited soloist. Bus departs 10:30 a.m. No restaurant stop.

Images of Jocotepec

The photo exhibit “Amanaceres de Jocotepec,” featuring images by Guillermo Aguirre, opens Friday, June 21, 5 p.m. in the Chapala city hall lobby.  All are welcome.

Recital

Soprano Myriam Villafuerte, tenors Jesus Cortes and Alessandro Distaffano and pianist Carlos Arellano present a recital titled “La Lirica Bohemia” on Sunday, June 23, 12:30 p.m,, at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo.

Mariachi

The Auditorio de la Ribera will host a performance by the group Sonidos y Movimientos de Mexico on Sunday, June 30, noon. They will present an alternative theatrical production titled “Mariachi, Patrimony of Humanity” showcasing Mexican folklore through a fusion of classic and folk dance, live mariachi music and stage arts.

The event is tied into the Expo Tequila program.  Admission is 200 pesos per person.  Proceeds will benefit municipal government cultural projects.

Advance tickets are available at the Centro Cultural de Ajijic on the plaza; Chapala’s Archivo Historico (Avenida Madero at Hidalgo) and at the auditorium.
