Three Big Events
The Belmont Stakes race is the star of the Saturday, June 7, 3 p.m. event at the American Legion Post 7 at Calle Morelos 114 in Chapala.
Attendees will find that they can make their own tacos from a taco bar at the low cost of just three tacos for 50 pesos.
Then, on Sunday, June 8 the fun at Post 7 continues with the Grill and Games from noon to 3 p.m. Order hamburgers and hot dogs, with all the fixings, from the Sunday grill, and then join friends to play popular card and board games. Those attending may want to bring favorite games to share with others.
The group will celebrate U.S. Flag Day on Saturday, June 14 with their weekly fish fry from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for either event.
Women’s Support Group
The next meeting of the Women’s Cancer and Life Threatening Disease Support Group will be on Monday, June 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This group is a place where women can find comfort and information from people who really understand the feelings they are experiencing. The group meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Meetings are free and are conducted by a professional counselor and are open to women in treatment and recent survivors. Lakeside Progressives
The Lakeside Progressives meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. at the Peacock Garden Restaurant on Colón in Ajijic.
At the Tuesday, June 10 meeting members of the Lakeside Progressives will consider the proposals of former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich to reverse the skyrocketing income inequality in the United States where the gap between the top 1 percent and bottom 99 percent has more than tripled since 1979.

Toastmasters Club
Tim Schubert represented the Lake Chapala Bilingual Toastmasters Club in the national competition in Merida where he made the first cut. Schubert does not plan to continue in the international competition in Kuala Lumpar.
The group will meet with a Spanish session on Tuesday, June 10. The Tuesday, June 17 meeting will be in English. These meetings help participants improve their language skills. Lake Chapala Birders
Local birders hoping to spot a variety of water birds will meet at 8 a.m. Thursday, June 12 at Donas Donuts in Ajijic. They then will carpool about 30 minutes to the Cajititlan marshlands, all accessible by car and with numerous reed beds that attract nesting birds. About 10:30 a.m. the group will return for breakfast at Sonrisas where they will complete the list of birds seen that morning. The group’s website at ChapalaBirders.org lists the 118 birds they spotted during May. The variety is astounding with birds as common as bluebirds, bobwhites and a variety of doves contrasting with those that are much more elusive and intriguing.
The group’s other June outing will be to spot near the lakeshore west of Ajijic where the group hopes to spot a number of types of orioles, wrens and shorebirds. Loss and Moving Forward
Through a circle of support, those who have lost a life partner through death or divorce, a parent or a child, members will focus on the roller coaster of emotions and a variety of ways to positively harness that energy into creating a new life. LCS Shopping Trip
The next shopping bus trip sponsored by the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) to Guadalajara’s Galerias Mall will leave La Floresta at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 12. Galerias Mall includes Liverpool, Sears, Best Buy, Zara, Sephora, and many smaller boutiques. Nearby are Sams, and the Super Walmart. Costco and Mega are across the street. New restaurants P.F. Changs and The Cheesecake Factory are opening in the food court.

Lucky Dog
The Sunday, June 15 “Not Just for Father’s Dinner” sponsored by Lucky Dog begins with cocktails from the no-host bar at 5:30 p.m. and a gourmet paella dinner cooked by Dr. Antonio Pinto. Litter gathering in Ajijic
Nearly 30 area children are gathering each week to clean up litter from Ajijic streets. Wearing their Ajijic Limpio tee shirts, the children are part of the program resurrected by Scott and Paula Young to honor the memory of long-time resident Juanita Reed and her years of service with a similar program. Upscale Resale
Upscale Resale has a new look and new hours. Through the month of June the shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday. All of the profits from this charity bazar help to fund Hope House which is home to 18 growing boys.
Visit the shop which is located on the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar between Maskaras Clinic and Dr. Pinto’s office. The bazaar’s new policy no longer accepts clothing or shoes on consignment in order to make room for more furniture and housewares.
Back to School
Back to school in June? Well, yes. This is the perfect time for Libby Townsend, local liason and promoter of all things Tarahumara, to begin pulling together enough supporters and money to provide and deliver supplies for the ingenious children’s free school in the Copper Canyon.
The clever Townsend has planned a fun Sunday, June 22 event with music, food, drink, raffles and prizes to make donating doubly enjoyable. The soiree will be held at La Bodega where the restaurant will donate all of the profits from the day’s fajitas sales and a good portion of the income from the bar to the cause. While the attendees enjoy the fun afternoon, they’ll know that they are helping children, some of whom walk an hour or more to attend school, gain the education that will make their life better and their future brighter – in the canyon or in the outside world.

Buddhist Community
The subject of the Wednesday, June 11, 4:30 p.m. dharma film of the The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Community is “Serenity and Meticulous Effort.”
Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian Buddhist practice community grounded in the original teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition. Membership is open to everyone, and includes people with Zen, Tibetan, and Shambhala backgrounds as well as people who have no prior experience with meditation.

St. Andrew’s Anglican
Rev. Susan Sica of Parsippany, New Jersey, will guide the congregation in looking at “The Sounds of Pentecost” during the 10 a.m. worship service on Sunday, June 8. The church will celebrate their Pentecost traditions which include a reading in many languages and the wearing of red to symbolize the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the church.
Sica, the daughter of the late Rt. Rev. Melchor Saucedo, will fill the pulpit for the remainder of June. There is just one service this month and it is followed by a time of welcome, refreshment and fellowship in the garden. Children’s Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m.

Little Chapel
The interdenominational congregation of The Little Chapel by the Lake will join with the congregation of Christ Church Lakeside for a joint service celebrating Pentecost at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 8. Christ Church
Christ Church Lakeside will celebrate Pentecost with Holy Communion in an 11:15 a.m. service on Sunday, June 8 shared with the congregation of the Little Chapel by the Lake at Carretera 10 near the Chula Vista golf course. Deacon Rob Wells of Christ Church will preside, Rev. Gene Raymer of The Little Chapel will present the message, “That’s the Spirit!.” Those attending are reminded to wear red.
Wells will lead a hour-long Bible study on the Gospel of Mark at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10 in the Fellowship Hall of The Little Chapel by the Lake.
Bishop Lino Rodrίguez Amaro of the Diocese of the West in the Anglican Church of Mexico, met with the vestry (bishop’s committee) of Christ Church Lakeside on June 1. His visit to discuss the status of Christ Church and its current and future location was by the request of the Diocese Standing Committee. Christ Church is a mission of the Diocese and meets in the worship facility of The Little Chapel by the Lake in Chula Vista.
In addition to the leaders and members of both Christ Church and the Little Chapel, Rev. Michael Schirmacher, Puerto Vallarta, the May supply pastor at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar and Little Chapel Elder Fernley Smith attended the meeting and participated in the discussion.
