‘Safe’ taxi service to start up

Authorities hope that some 6,000 taxi drivers will register for the “Taxi Seguro” program discouraging drinkers from getting behind the wheels of their vehicles.

One of the aims of the program is to ensure that passengers who have had “one too many” drinks are not ripped off by taxi drivers.

At the beginning of each journey, passengers will be given a ticket that contains information about the cab, the stand it was hired from and a number identifying the particular ride.

This will allow passengers to trace personal items left in the cab.

The drivers will be expected to use their taximeters and not negotiate fares with passengers.

The National Restaurant Chamber has signed an agreement with the Jalisco Transportation Department to promote the service. So far, 66 bars and restaurants have agreed to offer the service but  more are expected to sign on.

Taxi drivers who wish to register must present a negative anti-doping exam and provide a photograph and their personal details.
