A new, more independent era has begun for the much-beleaguered Bosque de la Primavera, the huge forest that hugs metro area Guadalajara’s west side and acts as a climate regulator, as well as “lung” that filters atmospheric contaminants.
The 36,000-hectare federally protected reserve and wildlife refuge is now rather grandly classified as a “Decentralized Public Organism” (Organismo Público Descentralizado), although as yet without an appointed director. Five sub-committees charged with a range of specific duties have also to be convened.
The new designation means that most matters pertaining to the Primavera will be administered by a technical committee, comprised of academics and members of civic society, as well as from state and municipal government departments. A representative from local ejidos (communal lands) is also on the committee.
