The number of flu-related deaths in Jalisco had risen to 71 by February 11, state health authorities reported Wednesday.
The total number of influenza cases reported this season in the state is 571.
The number of deaths in Jalisco is almost double that of any other state in Mexico, and three times that of Distrito Federal (DF or Mexico City).
State health officials say their quick and honest reporting of cases and fatalities compared to other states is the major reason for the high figure.
The total number of flu-related deaths in Mexico has risen to 472.
Most of the deceased were diagnosed with the H1N1-A strain, formerly known as swine flu. This year’s flu vaccine protects against this strain.
