Colectivo 4:20, a Guadalajara-based group created via social media that is campaigning to legalize marijuana in Mexico, took to the city’s premier avenue this week to disseminate information about the polemic substance.
While handing out leaflets to pedestrians on the median strip of Avenida Chapultepec, group spokesperson Cecilia Ortiz said it was time for the citizens of Guadalajara to “come out of the closet” and take an interest in the issue.
Colectivo 4:20 also wants the Mexican government to permit the growing of cannabis for personal use.
Ortiz said the myths and taboos surrounding marijuana must be destroyed and the facts about the benefits of the plant made clear.
Jalisco Attorney General Carlos Najera recently came out in opposition to the legalization of marijuana. Colectivo 4:20 says the medical and psychological benefits of marijuana outweigh all the negatives.
The group plans to participate in the May 3 Global Marijuana March to which 76 cities from 18 nations have signed up.
