Hands-free devices banned as ‘Mobility’ law takes effect

Jalisco’s new Mobility Law that became operative this week details a series of infringements that drivers commonly ignore and that are frequently overlooked by traffic cops.  

A key point of the new law is that drivers are strictly prohibited from using or consulting devices that may cause a distraction. This covers cellphones, including hands-free devices, GPS and tablet devices and maps.

All children less than 12 years old must be seated in the rear of vehicles and infants transported in special seats.

The new law  states that drivers passing schools must reduce their speed to a maximum of half the regular inner city speed limit, or 25 kilometers an hour.

Seat belts must be used at all times, and motorcyclists must wear protective helmets.

Fines will range from 10 to 30 days of minimum salary: 647 to 1,942 pesos.

The law also states that authorities is obliged to  maintain a register of offenders and that repeat offenders must undergo an orientation course in traffic law.
