Tuesday recitals

The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free! 

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. On May 17: Proyecto Caos, a 10-member local ensemble specializing in the work of contemporary composers from Jalisco. May 24: Songs from Spain with Teresa Banderas (mezzosoprano) and Jose Guadalupe Lopez Luevano (guitar). May 31: Recital with Brandon Sulbaran (violin) and Rosa Maria Valdez (piano).

Thursday Dance

Free Thursday contemporary dance groups featured in May are Piloteando Mi Vida on May 19 and Bruja Danza on May 26.

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL.  German pianist Lilya Zilberstein joins the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra to interpret the works of Sergei Rachmaninov, Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss. In addition to her orchestral appearances, Zilberstein has presented recitals in many of the world’s musical capitals. Several of her recordings made for Deutsche Grammophon have drawn enthusiastic reviews.

Double act

Amazing 80-year-old Mexican crooner Armando Manzanero teams up with famed Cuban singer, musician and songwriter  Francisco Cespedes.

The University of Guadalajara’s Higinio Ruvalcaba Chamber Orchestra, directed by Vladimir Milchtein and Konstantin Zioumbilov, performs works by Sergio Berchenko (Chile) and Luis Carlos Figueroa (Colombia). In addition, soloists Alejandro Moreno (clarinet) and Mauricio Hernandez (guitar) present the world premiere of “Claritarra,” a piece by Mexican composer Gerardo Tamez.

Dance from Russia

The St. Petersburg Classic Ballet presents “Giselle,” considered one of the finest works in classical dance.

Circus arts

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL.  Contemporary circus arts group Les 7 Doigts de la Main from Quebec close the festival with their acclaimed show, “Traces,” described by the New York Times as “a dose of pure urban adrenaline.”

Pied Piper

The Ballet Jalisco, the state’s only professional dance troupe, presents “The Pied Piper of Hamelin,” based on the version of the famous legend penned by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm in 1816.

Jazz concert

The New York Jazz All Stars series, sponsored by the Universidad de Guadalajara in conjunction with Jazz at Lincoln Center, presents the Edward Simon Trio. Simon, a Venezuelan pianist and composer, has played with many jazz greats and on several Grammy-nominated jazz albums.

Russian Classical Ballet

British jazz singer Zara McFarlane shows off her fine voice at the May Cultural Festival in Guadalajara. She released her debut album, “Until Tomorrow,” in 2011. Named one of Los Angeles Times’ “Faces to Watch” in 2013,  she has already shared stages with greats such as Gregory Porter and Dianne Reeves.
