Quacks Abound

It is all about fun, food and friendship at the Sixth Annual Duckaton Fundraiser for SETAC (Solidaridad Ed Thomas). You’ll enjoy live music and entertainment, free food, open bar and great prizes, all for a good cause.

The Duckaton takes place on the pool side terrace of condo-hotel Boana Torre Malibu, Amapas 325 in Zona Romantica, on Wednesday, February 25, 7-11 p.m. The festivities include a mariachi band, a DJ with dancing music, entertainment staged by various local artists and food provided by some of Vallarta’s finest restaurants.

The main event is the collection of ducks in the pool, which have numbers on them that correspond to  ticket numbers held by patrons.  A bunch of hunky boys dive into the pool and collect the toy ducks so you can find out which of the fabulous prizes, donated by generous members of the business community, you have won.

Tickets for the 2015 Duckaton are available at the SETAC Community Center for a donation of 350 pesos in advance or 450 at the door. The center is located at the corner of Constitucion 427 and Manuel Dieguez. 

SETAC offers a variety of services in and around Puerto Vallarta. This list includes English classes, AA meetings in English and Spanish, movie night, free walk-in HIV and syphilis rapid testing, counseling along with the promotion of safe sex through education and availability of condoms for the asking, mothers living with HIV are provided free formula for their babies along with counseling and moral support, transportation and lodging for patients of surrounding communities (Talpa, Mascota and Tomatlán) for their medical appointments, antiretroviral bank, PEP (Post-Exposure Profilaxis Program), Seguro Popular for foreigners, a specialist referral (free or at low cost) and much more.

Calling Fowl

There is an array of over 300 colorful and interesting species of birds in the Banderas Bay region. You can get a hand checking them all out at the 4th Annual Vallarta Bird Festival, which runs March 5 to 8. The festival is hosted by the Vallarta Bird Conservancy.

There are four action packed days of birding and nature walks with expert guides in unique habitats to satisfy even the most advanced birders. Workshops and lectures from local and international authorities on many interesting bird and birding related topics will also be held. You do not have to be a pro to attend, just bring your binoculars.

Belle of the Ball

Get your dancing shoes on and enjoy the amazing and lavish Becas Ball. This annual event takes place on February 28 at Club Regina in Marina Vallarta, Av. Paseo De La Marina 205.

This year’s theme is Casablanca, Morocco, and the suggested dress colors are black and white. The festivities begin at 6 p.m. in the garden. The cocktail party is designed and furnished by the Four Seasons Resort in Punta Mita.

Located next to the cocktail party will be an amazing array of donated silent auction items. Exotic hotels all over Mexico support Becas Vallarta year after year, as do the hard working artists, businesses, jewelers and restaurants of Puerto Vallarta. There will be golf passes from our prominent golf courses, Spanish and Pilates lessons and more. Bidding lasts until 9 p.m. Collecting and paying for winning bids will start at 9:30 p.m.

Everyone takes their seats at 7 p.m. and will be served wine and a four-course dinner that will tantalize any appetite. During dinner, and afterwards, there will be music for listening and dancing pleasure. There will be entertainment, introduction of the scholarship students and many surprises.

Becas Vallarta is a scholarship fund for less fortunate students from middle school through university. The funds help pay tuition, buy books, clothing and other school necessities. This is the oldest non-profit in Puerto Vallarta and has been assisting bright students for over 50 years.

River Tunes

Live music and excellent food are featured at the Fourth Annual Riverfest on Saturday, March 7, noon to 7 p.m. at El Rio BBQ, located along the Rio Cuale in Paso Ancho, less than ten minutes from the Libramiento. Proceeds benefit the special needs children at Pasitos de Luz in Puerto Vallarta.

The cost is only 80 pesos plus refreshment costs. There will be seven live bands, fabulous food provided by El Rio BBQ and Barcelonas Tapas, a silent auction, 50/50 draws, unique vendors and loads of fun in a gorgeous venue on the banks of the Cuale River.

The star-studded line-up of musicians includes Kim Kuzma, Chris Kenny, Regina Zerené, The Texas Embassy Blues Band, Los Chuyz, The Zippers and The Gecko Band. 

All proceeds go to Pasitos de Luz, which provides loving care and therapy to children with acute physical and psychological illnesses. 

There is the option of becoming Benefactor for a Day. The Patron Package is 500 pesos and includes early bird parking, preferential seating and complimentary snacks, non-alcoholic beverages for one and buffet.
