Animal rights groups say the time has come to end the tradition of horse-drawn calandrias (carriages) that take tourists around the streets of downtown Guadalajara.
The activists say the horses are “exploited like slaves,” and suffer huge pain while laboring under a hot sun for hours on end.
“It’s retrograde,” said Dulce Ramírez of Igualdad Animal. “There is no ethical way to justify (the practice).”
Ramirez suggests the horses should be replaced with bicycles, which can do exactly the same job.
You only have to look at the dilated pupils of the horses eyes to see the shape they are in, Ramirez said.
