The American School of Guadalajara has been recognized with an honorific mention in this year’s Ecological Merit Prize awarded by Mexico’s Environment Ministry (Semarnat).
The agency praised the school for its vision in “promoting values, habits and attitudes in favor of the environment, both inside and outside the institution.”
The school set up a “Green Committee” in 2009, comprised of students, teachers and parents. Since then the school has strived to become “carbon neutral” and “environmentally sustainable.”
Activities have branched out further than the school campus, with students taking part in missions to help clean up the Primavera Forest, among others.
According to staff, some high school students are currently researching a plan that could see solar panels installed on the campus.
