US Consulate recommends citizens report crimes to Mexican authorities

U.S. Consulate officers acknowledge that some Americans who are victims of crime are reluctant to report the incidents to Mexican authorities but make a strong case as to why filing a denuncia is the best course of action.

“Our main priority is the security of American citizens living and traveling in Mexico,” said Vice Consul Michele Roulbet of the U.S. Citizen Services section at the Guadalajara Consulate.  “So any time we receive calls of this nature, our very first piece of advice is to contact the police immediately and report it.”

“There may be occasions when people say I don’t feel comfortable going to the police or I don’t trust them. But we remind them that just as any tourist or resident in the United States is protected by the police there, the same is the case here.

“The Mexican police is the body that provides protection and assistance for victims of crime. That is not something we can do. We can’t investigate or prosecute.

“We can’t tell people you have go to the police but we tell them you need to do what you feel is right for you.”
