The perennial problem of what to do with the ambulant vendors who hawk their wares on the streets, pedestrian walkways and plazas of downtown Guadalajara just got a lot more complicated.
At the end of last week, the head of city hall’s Inspection and Vigilance Department, Salvador Orozco Santillan, was removed from his post by the mayor after reports linked him to acts of corruption, specifically overseeing inspectors who were accepting bribes from vendors without permits. A few days later, the scandal widened to include Guadalajara’s Secretary General (the mayor’s number two), Tomas Vazquez Vigil, who has taken a month’s leave of absence while the allegations are investigated.
