HIV numbers set to spike, expert warns

Mexico’s top AIDS expert has warned that the nation is facing a sharp surge in the number of infected people if prevention measures continue to be ignored, especially by the young.

Nearly half of the 183,000 people living with the HIV virus in Mexico are unaware of their condition, said Patricia Uribe, director of the Centro Nacional para la Prevencion y el Control del VIH/Sida (Censida). This raises significantly the probability of more people becoming infected unknowingly, she said.
