Circus arts

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL.  Contemporary circus arts group Les 7 Doigts de la Main from Quebec close the festival with their acclaimed show, “Traces,” described by the New York Times as “a dose of pure urban adrenaline.”

Tuesday recitals

The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free!  Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. dalupe Lopez Luevano (guitar). On May 31: Recital with Brandon Sulbaran (violin) and Rosa Maria Valdez (piano). June 7: The guitar quartet Guitarreto perform works by a variety of composers, including Vivaldi, Antônio Carlos Jobim and Pepe Guizar. June 14: Recital by Ópera Joven de Guadalajara, comprising Gustavo Allfadir (barítone), Florencia Nepote (soprano), José Alonso Pérez (tenor), Ciria Dorantes (mezzo-soprano) – accompanied by Javier Morales (piano). They will interpret classics by Verdi, Mozart, Puccini, Donizetti and others. The second half of the concert is dedicated to Mexican favorites, such as “Granada” by Agustín Lara, “Júrame” by María Grever and “Bésame mucho” by Consuelo Velázquez. June 21: Pianist Lourdes Santiago and Manuel Delaflor in concert, with the second half featuring a “four-hands” demonstration.  June 28: Recital by Pedro Velázquez Cardoso (flute) and José Guadalupe López Luévano (guitar).

Pied Piper

The Ballet Jalisco, the state’s only professional dance troupe, presents “The Pied Piper of Hamelin,” based on the version of the famous legend penned by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm in 1816.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

Summer season kicks off with the “Three Great ‘B’s’” – Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.Marco Parisotto conducts Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (BWV 582), arranged by Ottorino Respighi, followed by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21,  with Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 as the finale.

Jazz concert

The New York Jazz All Stars series, sponsored by the Universidad de Guadalajara in conjunction with Jazz at Lincoln Center, presents the Edward Simon Trio. Simon, a Venezuelan pianist and composer, has played with many jazz greats and on several Grammy-nominated jazz albums.

US student choir

The 80-year-old Palo Alto High School Choir, directed by Michael Najar,  will present a concert as part of its current tour of Mexico.

The third program of the summer season sees guest director Günter Neuhold of Austria take the baton to lead the musicians in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, Op. 60 and Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67.  Sandwiched between the two works will be a performance of Armando Luna’s Sinfonía núm. 2, Homenaje a Posada.

Russian pianist Daniil Kharitonov joins JPO director Parisotto for the summer season finale.  Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 will conclude the concert, following three more of the German master’s works: Egmont, Op. 84; Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat (“Emperor”) and Coriolan Overture Op. 62.
