Unique nacimiento display at Lakeside Presbyterian

Here’s just the thing to get you in the Christmas spirit: a stunning display of nacimiento (creche) scenes.  In fact, 236 in total from all over the world.

The collection was donated to Lakeside Presbyterian by Mary Alice Sargent, who collected them over a period of nearly 15 years. Her collection was gathered from countries as far-ranging as the United States, Canada, Guatemala, Israel, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Ireland, France, Peru, Bolivia, Russia, El Salvador, Italy, Scotland, New Zealand and South Africa. The majority, however, are Mexican.

Viewers will note the many cultural differences among the characters and animals. For example, some cultures see the angel as more important than the kings. Latin American scenes are usually more elaborate than those from north of the border and often feature the devil as well as the Holy Family. Marked differences exist even between neighboring states, such as Michoacan and Jalisco.

The artists have used materials as diverse as clay, Waterford crystal, Belgian lace, corn husks, papier mache, burlap, wood, soap, pewter and copper.  The tiniest scene features figures smaller than a watermelon seed.  The largest figures stand more than two feet tall.

Don’t miss this special display. Most likely you have never seen anything like it.  All are welcome, there is no charge.

The manger scenes will be set up at Lakeside Presbyterian Church for viewing on Friday, December 6, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturday, December 7, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, December 9,  11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesday, December 10, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  On Friday, there will be a community luncheon at 1 p.m., open to all.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church is in Riberas del Pilar, on the mountain side of the Carretera, just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.
