Teaching Mexican Youth VALUABLE LIFE SKILLS Through Woodworking and Carpentry
HAVE HAMMER … WILL TRAVEL
In 2007, the founders of Have Hammer … Will Travel (HHWT) began proudly realizing their vision of a trade school for kids, teens, and adults as their humble effort to contribute to the Lake Chapala community in gratitude for their own many fortunes in life. The program started modestly at Mision San Pablo Orphanage in Los Cedros under a hot tin roof that leaked when it rained, by repairing discarded tables for use as workbenches, making shop aprons from thrift store blue jeans, frequently blowing fuses, and using an old rusted fence for a materials crib. Since its inception, over 250 students have participated in HHWT classes, experiencing pride in their accomplishments, gaining self-esteem, and acquiring an "I can do it" attitude.
Teaching valuable life skills through woodworking is the organization’s motto.
