Tijuana makes digital switchover

Tijuana has become the first Mexican city to switch from analog to digital television broadcasts. Guadalajara and most of central Mexico are scheduled to make the changeover in November 2014.  

Analog signals may remain active in the border city until after the July 7 state elections, since many residents still do not have the correct equipment to receive the digital broadcasts.  Tijuana authorities have distributed free receivers and antennas to many low-income families, something that is likely to be repeated in other areas of Mexico as the switchover is implemented in stages over the next 18 months.

The United States had switched completely to digital by 2009 and Canada by 2011.  Mexico hopes to became 100 percent digital by the end of 2015 and will be the first Latin American country to complete the process.
