City-based Democrats head to Ajijic to vote in primary

Sporting “I voted today” buttons, 16 Guadalajara-based Americans relax and order lunch after traveling by bus to Ajijic to join about 300 other expats voting in person in the Democrats Abroad primary March 7.

Yves’ restaurant with its pool and resident donkeys — an apparently accidental echo of the Democratic party’s mascot — was the venue for the post-voting meal.

Here, Jude Wallesen, organizer of the Guadalajara voters, discusses plans to get together for a movie. “We all really enjoyed one another’s company during the trip. It was a nice alchemy,” she commented. “The volunteers at the polling sight were wonderful.” Another expat in the GDL contingent, Dr. Will Prescott, a geophysicist and former Peace Corps volunteer, said he voted in Ajijic because his home state, Colorado, held a caucus. “I vote in every election — always have since I was about 20.”
