British Evening

British residents of Guadalajara and their friends will gather for another informal monthly get-together at the home of Helen Carter on Saturday, August 10, from 8.30 p.m. onwards.

 

The evenings provide the chance for expat Brits to chew the fat over a drink or two.  All are asked to bring a plate of grub and their favorite tipple. Polution monitor

To disseminate air quality reports from the Monitoring Network in Guadalajara in real time, last Thursday the Colectivo Ecologista de Jalisco (Ecological Collective) presented the Air Quality Mexico app available for cell phones and mobile devices.

According to agency Executive Director, Maite Cortés, through this application users can see the type of pollutant, Imeca (Metropolitan Index of Air Quality) value and potential health effects. The Mexico Air Quality is available for the iPhone and Android devices.

Beauty queen

Paola Sanchez Corona defeated 11 finalists to be elected Miss Jalisco 2013 last Tuesday in a totally full Teatro Diana.

This is just the beginning of the path for this 20-year-old Tapatia. The finals for Miss Mexico will take place in Toluca next October, and this year’s Miss Universe peageant will be held in Moscow next December.

Jalisco has won Miss Mexico four times, and the second Mexican Miss Universe was also a Tapatia: Ximena Navarrete, in 2010.

Via Recreativa expands

Guadalajara will extend Sunday’s Via Recreativa to reach the popular Santa Cecilia neigborhood, northeast of the city, as part of City Hall strategy to bring social incentives to one of the city’s more conflictive areas due to violence and crime. As part of this plan Parque  Juan Soriano will be center of several  sports, cultural and recreational activities. The new branch will add 1.68 kilometers to the current 25. Some 180 thousand people take advantage of the route every week. Aside from the investment of half a million pesos for equipment and gear, the city will hire 35 new young aides.

Choo choo weekend

This year Expo Guadalajara hosts the 17th Convention of railroads, models, and train fans Friday, August 2 to Sunday,  August 4.

This convention is held annually. This year Mexican train aficionado associations will reign at the convention. Activities include exhibitions of different scale models, conferences, clinics of modeling techniques, films, retail outlets, railway workshops, rides and other activities related to the topic in order to encourage more people to join in this hobby.

Amazing rocks

“Habitat Petreo,” a fascinating show of rare pieces of marble,  granite and semiprecious rocks is on at the in Paleonthology Museum until September 8.

The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Museo de Paleontología is located at Doctor R. Michel #520 in Parque Agua Azul. Entrance is 16 pesos.
