Consulate July 4th bash

U.S. Consul General Daniel Keller gave a rousing speech on the similarities and ties that bind Mexico and the United States at his invitation-only celebration to mark the 236th anniversary of U.S. Independence, Tuesday, July 3 at the Tec de Monterrey Convention Center in Zapopan.

This is Keller’s last month in Guadalajara as consul general, but he said he very well may return.

Hundreds of guests representing federal, state and local government, media and various businesses enjoyed the music of the Tall Boys Band, tequila from Herradura, Patron and Sauza and food provided by Chili’s, Applebee’s, Outback, Peter Piper Pizza, Krispy Kreme Donuts, Burger King, Johnny Rockets, Starbucks, Coca Cola and Costco.

A stirring rendition of the Mexican national anthem by tenor Hector Lopez had many in attendance singing along. Then a duet by U.S. vice consuls Nicholas Geisinger and Timothy Dunaway of the Star Spangled Banner was so well harmonized that many Americans in attendance just listened.

Guadalajara’s monthly Mexpat meeting takes place Thursday, July 17 at The Temple Bar, Av. Lopez Mateos 1860, in Colonia Americana, a few blocks from Av. Americas.

Mexpat brings together a wide range of expatriates from diverse countries each month to chew the fat and get acquainted with new and old friends.

Temple Bar is a popular Irish-themed pub with a wide selection of national and imported brews. It also serves a good selection of food, including fish and chips.

The action starts at 7 p.m. and goes on until around 11 p.m. For more information call (331) 556-1948.

Plant trees

The National Forestry Commission has put out a call for volunteers to help plant trees in the Primavera Forest, which suffered one of the worst fires in its history in May.

Reforestation is planned on three consecutive Saturdays: July 15, 22 and 29.

To avoid too many volunteers arriving by car, free bus transportation is being provided between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. (leaving every 20 minutes) from the Plaza Galerias, the Juarez Tren Ligero station and at points on both the northern and southern Periferico.

The entry point to the forest will be at kilometer 3 on the Carretera Libre (free road) to Tala, by the pedestrian bridge located one kilometer after the entrance to Las Tortugas water park.

To register to be a volunteer, call (33) 3110-0693 or 3110-1828, or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Free sterilizations

Free dog and cat neutering is taking place all this week at the Centro de Salud Animal de Zapopan (Av Laureles/Carretera a Tesistan 380A, beside the police station). The opportunity will be available all day on Saturday, July 7. Call (33) 38-18-22-00, ext. 3280 and 3281 for more information.
