New inmates at zoo

After a pregnancy period of almost nine months, two hippopotami gave birth to 30-kilo babies in the Guadalajara Zoo last Friday.

Tachita and Tammy, sisters who were themselves born in the Guadalajara Zoo, gave birth eight hours apart to their as-yet unnamed offspring. The father, six-year-old Trino, arrived from the Queretaro Zoo on October 25 to impregnate the females as part of a reproduction in captivity program.

The hippos live in the zoo’s Masai Mara Safari Park, an open enclosure in which different species coexist as they would in their native habit.

The Guadalajara Zoo is renowned for providing comfortable conditions and spacious enclosures, and its fine reproductive record is testament to the fact that the animals feel at home. In 2012 alone, 20 animals have been born in the safari park, including zebras, antelope, giraffes, buffaloes, impalas and even lions.

Guadalajara’s monthly Mexpat meeting takes place Tuesday, July 17 at The Temple Bar, Av. Lopez Mateos 1860, in Colonia Americana, a few blocks from Av. Americas.

Mexpat brings together a wide range of expatriates from diverse countries each month to chew the fat and get acquainted with new and old friends.

Temple Bar is a popular Irish-themed pub with a wide selection of national and imported brews. It also serves a good selection of food, including fish and chips.

The action starts at 7 p.m. and goes on until around 11 p.m. For more information call (331) 556-1948.

Horses in rude health

Although some may look a little worse for wear, the horses that tow tourists in carriages (known as calandrias) around the city center are almost all in good condition, a recent examination has proved. Verifying over 100 horses, Guadalajara’s Animal Health Center found most in fine health, calling for just seven to be retired purely for age reasons. The famed horse-drawn carriages transport visitors around tourist attractions in central Guadalajara.

Beauty pageant

Exciting news for fans of attractive women strutting their stuff on stage: the Nuestra Belleza Jalisco 2012 beauty pageant takes place at the Teatro Diana on Thursday, July 19.

The winner will go on to represent the state in Nuestra Belleza Mexico, with the chance to be Mexico’s participant in Miss Universe 2012 at stake.

Having won Nuestra Belleza Jalisco in 2010, Guadalajara native Ximena Navarrete famously went on to be crowned Miss Universe.

The three-hour event begins at 8 p.m. Entry is 100-150 pesos.
