Lexi Thompson triumphs at Guadalajara Country Club

Lexi Thompson sank a six-foot birdie putt on the final hole of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational  to edge Stacy Lewis by one stroke and win her second LPGA trophy of the season.

The two Americans went to head to head for most of the fourth day at the Guadalajara Country Club amid overcast conditions early on. Fortunately for the enthusiastic crowd, the clouds eventually lifted allowing the dramatic finale to be played out in glorious sunshine.

Showing no sign of nerves, the 18-year-old Thompson raced to a three-stroke lead by the turn.  Lewis, a three-time winner in 2013, clawed herself back into contention with birdies at the 12th and 13th but bogeyed the 17th after an scuffed chip shot that scarcely advanced two feet.

Thompson and Lewis headed into the par-5 18th level at 15-under and left themselves with similar birdie putts for victory.  But whereas Thompson confidently holed her uphill putt, Lewis' stroke was more tentative and her trickier downhill putt slid past the hole.

World number one Inbee Park. from South Korea, finished fourth on 11-under, earning her the Rolex Player of the Year Award.

This was Thompson's third career LPGA Tour win in in her second season as a professional, and her second victory in her last four starts.

Thompson has long been considered a potential number one golfer of the future.   In 2007, at the age of 12, she became the youngest person to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open. She finished runner-up at the 2010 Evian Masters at the age of 15.

One of the tour's longest drivers, Thompson ranks second in driving distance (270.289 yards) in 2013.
She was the only player to reach the Guadalajara Country Club's 508-yard, par five ninth hole in two on two occasions this week.

Thompson picked a winner's check for 200,000 dollars, bringing her 2013 earnings to 1,206,989 dollars.

Tournament host Lorena Ochoa, who gave birth to her second child last week, flew in from Mexico City to present the trophy to Thompson. Addressing the crowd, she welled up while talking about her tournament, which is likely to move from Guadalajara next year after the Jalisco state government pulled its sponsorship.
